Since its establishment in 1995, the Sixth Form at William Farr has been outstandingly successful. We are an academic Sixth Form and offer a wide range of A Level courses. We welcome students from Year 11 and students from other schools who wish to join us in Year 12.

The Sixth Form is an integral part of the school community. All lessons take place throughout the school and Sixth Form students are encouraged to engage with and support the younger year groups.

We are keen for our students to develop their personal skills, as well as achieve academically. Sixth Form students are encouraged to make a commitment to be involved in the life of the school. Students take advantage of the opportunities for them to join the School Council, be student mentors, support House events, take part in concerts and productions, as well as raise money for charity.

High expectations, high quality Teaching and Learning and the school’s Care and Guidance ethos ensure that our students flourish. At William Farr, we are exceptionally proud of our Sixth Form and its place at the heart of the school community.

How we meet the 16-19 Study Programme Requirements

Students in the Sixth Form will typically take 3 A Level subjects and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Our academic offering means that students study a structured and challenging learning programme that supports their development and progression in line with their career plans.

As part of their curriculum, students’ study PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) incorporating personal development where students are encouraged to reflect on their health and wellbeing, their role as a global citizen, relationships and living in the wider world. In addition, careers education is an essential element of PSHE, where students are encouraged to research the academic requirements for a wide range of career paths supplemented by a range of impartial external speakers. Work experience is undertaken in Year 12 to provide students with the opportunity to develop their careers choices and to apply their skills in a real workplace environment.

Our students are supported in planning their next steps after Sixth Form with students opting for a wide range of university courses or apprenticeships with key companies such as Siemens, Jaguar Land Rover, the National Grid and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade 4, in English Language or Mathematics, a specific programme is implemented to support students to secure these qualifications.

Students attend our Sixth Form full time, with supervised study time built into the curriculum. This allows students to develop broader study skills such as independent research and effective time management.
