The Great Debate

First place at the Regional heats of the Historical Association's 'Great Debate' at Lincoln University.

On Wednesday 18 January 2023, the History department entered 6 students into the ‘Great Debate’. This is a prestigious, national, public-speaking competition, for students aged 16-19. During the heat, students had five minutes to present their speech, arguing their answer to the question: ‘Why does history matter to me?’

The competition was an ideal opportunity for students to gain valuable experience in speaking to an audience and developing their debating skills, confidence and self-esteem.

Congratulations to Evie Smith, who won first place, and who goes on to the Finals.
