Sixth Form Entry Requirements

The school sets what it believes to be realistic entry qualifications. It is our experience that meeting these requirements gives students a far greater chance of completing their course and achieving the grades that they want.

In order to join the Sixth Form students have to meet an overall points based entry requirement as well as meeting the grade based entry requirements for each of the subjects that they wish to study.

As students will be following a broad Sixth Form curriculum we want to see them demonstrate a breadth of achievement in their GCSE examinations.

All reformed GCSEs will have grades given as numbers [1 – 9] with a points score equivalent to the grade, so a 5 in English Language will carry 5 points.

The entry requirement for A Level study and the extended project is a minimum of 40 points based on 9 GCSEs [or equivalent qualifications]. For students who have not taken 9 GCSEs then the minimum points entry requirement may be lowered.

Old lettered grades will still be awarded in a minority of subjects. Each GCSE grade is allocated points as follows:

GCSE Grade
Points
G
1.0
F
1.5
E
2.0
D
3.0
C
4.0
B
5.5
A
7.0
A*
8.5

In addition students will have to meet the grade-based entry requirements for each of the subjects that they wish to study. These are listed in the table below.

Students wishing to study 4 A Level subjects should have demonstrated a particular talent in one or more subject areas as well as the potential to cope with the additional workload. They should exceed the minimum points entry requirement for the Sixth Form and exceed the minimum
grade-based entry for the subjects that they wish to study.

It is possible to study some subjects at A Level that you may not have studied at GCSE. In this case we will ask for a GCSE grade 6 or grade B in a related subject. A positive attitude and interest in the new subject is considered to be essential.
