Incredible GCSE Results

Students at William Farr achieved one of the highest pass rates it has ever recorded in this year’s GCSE results and across all subjects a third of grades were A* or A - the highest level the school has ever achieved.

The record number of top grades for the school comes despite exam regulators predicting the number of top grades awarded in maths and English will be cut sharply this year following reforms to the marking system.

Only two per cent of pupils are predicted to get new top 9 grade in English – half the proportion who scored A* last year. In maths only three per cent will get a 9 compared with the seven per cent who got an A* last year, according to estimates.

A remarkable 85 per cent of exams sat by the 233 pupils at the Welton school resulted in grades A* - C, including the new Maths and English equivalents.

This year, for the first time, GCSE English and Maths exams changed their grades from letters to numbers between 9 and 1. Under the new system grades 9,8 and 7 are equivalent to A* and A; 6,5 and 4 equivalent to B and C; and 3,2 and 1 equivalent to D, E, G and G.

The number of pupils at William Farr achieving grades between 9 and 4 was the third highest in the school’s history – at 81 per cent.

More than one if four of all exams taken in English and Maths resulted in grades 7, 8 or 9 and 100 per cent of students passed the two subjects – a feat only achieved once before. Nearly nine in ten of all students achieved a grade 4 or above in the two subjects.

Headteacher Andy Stones said he also anticipated a significant improvement in the school’s Progress 8 Measure – which measures pupils' progress across eight subjects from age 11 to 16.

Last year the school Progress 8 measure put William Farr in the top 25 per cent of schools nationally.

There were also some remarkable personal GCSE achievements at the school.
