Year 7 Catch Up Literacy and Numeracy Report 2019-20

Year 7 Catch-Up Premium 2019/20

Rational

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives schools additional funding to support year 7 pupils who did not achieve the expected standard in reading, spelling and or/maths at the end of key stage 2. Using various interventions, we as a school focus on giving these students the opportunity to ‘catch up’ to their peers in their first year at secondary school. Schools decide how this additional funding should be spent to best support the boosting of these young people’s progress.

Identification

In 2019/20 we will identify the Catch-up premium cohort and using the Literacy Assessment Programme to assess reading and spelling. On advice from the school’s specialist teacher, we will focus on students who achieve a standardised score of below 90. Maths students will be identified using a whole cohort maths assessment.

This academic year, 39 students have been identified as eligible for Catch – Up Intervention in literacy, and a further 19 students were identified in maths.

YEAR 7 LITERACY AND NUMERACY CATCH-UP PREMIUM REPORT (2018/19)

How we spent our allocation in 2018/19

In September 2018, 67 students were identified as eligible for Catch – Up Intervention in Literacy and 18 students in Maths.

William Farr School was allocated £15288 as part of the Catch up Premium to help improve learning outcomes for our Catch up students. We provided a range of bespoke and individualised interventions for these students who were allocated support that was appropriate for their needs.

Changes we will make to the programme based on experiences this year.

  • Reduce the criteria for intervention to a standardised score of below 90 based on feedback from the Specialist Teacher. This adjustment will allow us to better focus our resources.
  • Put fewer students into LEXIA, but increase time spent on the intervention.
  • Widen out number of full time lead staff, to widen our use of expertise in the department.

We will continue to support our Catch - Up students who have not made sufficient progress, using the graduated approach.
